Several Moroccans have circulated video clips of world-famous wrestler and actor John Cena engaging in a fight on the streets of Casablanca. However, these scenes are actually part of the filming for a new action movie titled "Matchbox," directed by Sam Hargrave.
Various video clips shared on Moroccan Facebook pages and X accounts highlight different moments from the film set. Some footage shows a car flipping over at a tunnel in Casablanca, while another scene captures John Cena in a fight, drawing his gun. The most viral clip, however, shows him greeting fans while walking through the natural film set—the streets of Casablanca.
Filming has not been limited to Casablanca; scenes are also being shot in Erfoud and the Merzouga Desert (southeastern Morocco). Additional footage shows Cena in various action-packed sequences as director Sam Hargrave focuses on capturing high-intensity stunts. The movie also features Jessica Biel and Dania Guerra in major roles.
About the Movie "Matchbox"
The film, reportedly inspired by a game of the same name, tells the story of old friends who reunite to face a global catastrophe while rediscovering the bonds of their past friendship.
According to media sources, the film has a budget of $75 million, with $15 million allocated for filming in Morocco.
Casablanca: A Popular Filming Destination
Many residents of Casablanca were surprised by the closure of tunnels, streets, and key intersections, raising questions about the disruptions. It was later revealed that these closures were purely for cinematic purposes, accommodating large-scale action sequences, even on the rooftops of buildings.
This isn’t the first time Casablanca has hosted major international film productions. The city has been the backdrop for several action films, including Tom Cruise’s "Mission: Impossible."
